Q: What is the Providence Cup?
A: The Providence Cup is an opportunity for high school mock trial teams to compete for cash awards and prizes. The competition is held annually in the Fall. Each team competes in multiple rounds leading up to the final round, concluding with an awards banquet.
Q: What is the purpose of Providence Cup?
A: The Providence Cup is designed to provide an avenue for high school students to "kick off" the mock trial season, use their mock trial skills and compete for awards and prizes. Just like athletes, these students have developed valuable skills worthy of recognition. This venue acknowledges these skills and distributes awards appropriately.
Q: Who is eligible to participate?
A: Students between the ages of 14-18 may participate. A graduated student may participate as long as the graduation was in the same year as the competition. Participants may register individually, but team designation must be declared one month prior to competition.
Q: What if I don't have a team?
A: Students wanting to participate, but who don't have a team may contact the Providence Cup to discuss team placement. The Providence Cup does not guarantee team placement, but may provide information on team openings.
Q: Must each team have a coach?
A: Yes, a coach is necessary and must attend the competition. The case, competition rules, and other appropriate information are distributed to the coach.
Q: What other activities are scheduled during the competition?
A: Students may have the opportunity of visiting host city attractions depending on their arrival and departure time and their advancement in the competition. Some social activities have been scheduled to promote camaraderie among the students. See Cup Details for Host City attractions.
Q: What is the cost to register for the Providence Cup?
A: The registration fee is $660 for a four member team and one coach. Registration fees may be reduced by early registration discounts. An additional registration fee is required for each extra team member and/or coach. Total registration fees must be paid prior to competition. Registration fees cover the competition, appropriate lunches, and the awards banquet. Students and coaches are responsible for travel to and from the competition, hotel accommodations/parking, transportation to and from the airport, and other meals.
Q: What if I can't afford the registration fee?
A: Teams may solicit local sponsors to assist with registration fees. The Providence Cup may provide information on how to get a sponsor; however, they do not currently offer sponsorship funds for financially challenged teams.
Q: What is the Dress Code during The Cup?
A: Students may wear casual attire during free time; however, business attire is required during competition and the Awards Ceremony. Detailed clothing needs are provided in the registration packet.
